Fred Harris

Paying tribute to routes guru Fred 'Hatch' Harris, formerly Supervisor Home Routes Admin.

Retiree Fred 'Hatch' Harris died on 9 August 2003, aged 87.

He worked for the AA for 49 years before his retirement. He became a trusted and well-respected member of the home touring team. Anyone who worked within home routes or touring information services between the early 1930s and the 1980s will remember 'Hatch', as he was known.

His knowledge of procedures and replacements became legendary. He always found time to encourage and support new recruits. Fred's enthusiasm for his job and the way he could serve the millions of members who used the routes service are fine examples of the type of character and dedication that helped membership grow so significantly in the latter half of the 20th century.

His funeral was on Thursday 21 August 2003 at Northampton.
