Henry George Brough

Always known as 'George', he died in hospital at Basingstoke on 20/21 June. George joined the staff as a messenger boy at Fanum House, New Coventry Street, London on 30 March 1936 at the age of 14. He became on of that rare group of staff who completed 50 years service. After a period in what was then known as 'Foreign Touring Department' his AA service was interrupted by the second world war in which he was taken prisoner. He rejoined the staff in 1946 and became a route compiler in the Home Touring Department. Graduating to Section Leader he was forever afterwards associated with touring in all its aspects.

In 1968 the administrative and operational functions of the former Routes Production Department were separated and George continued with the administrative side. He contributed greatly to the preparation and development of the series of Through Route Maps of which many thousands are issued every year and which have helped to relieve pressure on the production of individually prepared routes both for home and Europe.

Later, in 1970, the administrative and research functions were separated and George moved to the research section which formed part of the basis of the new Publications Division. By 1973 George had been appointed Head of Publications Research with responsibility for a greater range of publications and contact with a wide variety of staff in other departments. He retired in 1986.

Many retired and serving staff supported his family at the funeral. There are many others who would wish to extend sympathy to his widow and family.
